Prof Norton's talk

November 5, 2009 by mnorris

In his talk yesterday, Brian Norton referred to one of the effects of making homes more efficient.  He said that people tended to absorb the improvements into their lifestyle e.g. they wore less clothing at home, as their new attic insulation maintained a higher temperature with the heating at the same setting, rather than turning the heating down a notch or two. This is known in economics as the Khazzoom-Brookes postulate - seehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khazzoom-Brookes_postulate Greater efficiency can paradoxically increase energy consumption by reducing overall cost service and therefore stimulates demand.  This has been referred to by Bill St Arnaud, for instance, in some of his talks - http://billstarnaud.blogspot.com/
